![]() ![]() Unfortunately the event the following night (a trova performance) was cancelled due to heavy rain, and on the third night (a guided cemetery tour) it was too far out for us to get to. Towards the end of the performance, the dancers danced with beer bottles and even trays filled with glasses and bottles on their heads and started doing really quick turns, which was very impressive. We arrived on a Monday and that night saw an amazing hour-long outdoor performance of Jarana yucateca, a typical folk dance of the region, which was riveting. Every night there is a free organised event in the city centre. ![]() We were very pleased at all the cultural events taking place in the city. These murals were an absolute highlight of our visit to Mérida, and are guaranteed to leave an impression on the viewer. His story is part of a book I read before leaving for Mexico by Rosy Hugener called Xtabentum: A Novel of Yucatan. These murals tell the experiences and history of the Maya in Yucatán, and one of them contains the image of Felipe Carillo Puerto, who is an iconic figure in the city’s history. The murals by Fernando Castro Pacheco (who passed away in 2013) in the Palacio de Gobierno are truly remarkable. ![]() While some of Mérida’s buildings are impressive, the cultural aspects are really what make the city shine. ![]()
